EAST REGION

The East Region is located in the South-east of the country with Bertoua as its Chief-town. The majority of its territory is covered by the Equatorial forest. It is bordered to the South by Adamawa and Centre Regions. The Region shares its boundaries with three Divisions of the Central African Republic and with one Division of the Republic of Congo.

The Region is made up of four Divisions, a City Council, and 33 Municipal Councils, notably, the Boumba and Ngoko Division with 4 Councils, the Haut-Nyong Division with 14 Councils, the Kadey Division with 7 Councils, the Lom and Djerem Division with 8 Councils, and a City Council. The Region covers a surface area of 109,000 km2 and hosted over 835,642 inhabitants in 2015.

Although the Region’s population almost doubled between the 1976 and 2005 censuses, with 835,642 inhabitants representing 4.4% of the total population of Cameroon, It is the least densely populated Region with a density ratio of 7.1 inhabitants per km².

It is made up of 33 Municipal Councils and a City Council. The Region has several attractive areas such as the Dja Wildlife Reserve, the Lobéké National Park, the Nki National Park and the Mbam and Djerem National Park.
